Scholarships for Incoming Freshman

Florence Simon Beecher

Three scholarships will be awarded annually by the YSU Department of Art to incoming freshman. Recipients will be selected on the basis of artistic talent. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 high school grade point average, apply to YSU and enroll as a studio art major pursuing the BFA degree. Drop off to Art office by May 1, 2017.

Theodore R. Cubbison Painting Award

One scholarship for an incoming freshman majoring in painting/printmaking will be awarded in the name of Theodore R. Cubbison. All incoming freshman intending to pursue the BFA in painting/printmaking with a minimum 2.8 GPA are encouraged to apply for this competitive award.

Roger and Gloria Jones Fine Art Scholarship

One $1,000 scholarship in Fine Arts will be awarded through a generous grant from Roger and Gloria Jones. All incoming freshman pursuing the BFA degree in Studio Art with a minimum 3.0 GPA are encouraged to apply for this competitive award.

Scholarships for Current Students

Scholarship applications are reviewed in February and awarded for the following year. Deadline to apply for all scholarships is Monday February 20 4pm. All portfolios must be submitted on CD or Jump Drive (applications must be submitted for each individual scholarship but unless works submitted are different only one portfolio need be submitted)

Theodore R. Cubbison Painting Scholarships (All Painting/Printmaking Majors)

Two scholarships for current students majoring in painting/printmaking will be awarded in the name of Theodore R. Cubbison. All painting/printmaking majors are encouraged to apply for this competitive award. Applicant must be a painting/printmaking major maintaining a 2.8 GPA. Applications must include an artist’s statement, statement of need and a portfolio of work to be evaluated by the selection committee. Portfolios must include 10-12 works (drawings may be included).

George Meshel Scholarship in Studio Art/Painting

One scholarship for a studio art student will be awarded in the name of George Meshel. All students concentrating in Painting/Interdisciplinary Studio are encouraged to apply for this competitive award. Applicant must have a 2.7 GPA. Applications must include a letter expressing interest in the scholarship and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.

Ruth Davies Newman Scholarship (Female Sophomore Art Major)

One scholarship for a female studio art major will be awarded in honor of Ruth Davies Newman, Youngstown College Class of 1943 who had to leave after her first year due to family financial circumstances. Applicants must be sophomore in class rank (must have completed first year); must have a minimum 2.5 GPA; and must demonstrate financial need (FAFSA form must be completed). Scholarship is renewable through the application and selection process provided eligibility requirements continue to be met. This award when combined with all other financial assistance will not exceed the cost of full tuition, books and supplies. Applications must include a cover letter, a statement demonstrating need and a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.

Jessica C. Porcase Memorial Scholarship (Female Graphic + Interactive Design Major)

One scholarship for a female Graphic Design major (preference given to student who works part-time and played a sport in H.S.) will be awarded through a memorial fund in remembrance of Jessica C. Porcase. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.

Elaine Glasser Art Education Scholarship (Art Education Major)

One or Two scholarships for art education majors will be awarded through a memorial fund for Art Professor Elaine Glasser.

Applicants must have a 2.7 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.

Robert J. Yalch Scholarship for Studio Art (Sophomore or Junior Studio Art Majors)

One scholarship for a sophomore or junior studio art major will be awarded through a generous grant from the Robert J. Yalch Endowment. Applicants must have a 2.7 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works to be evaluated by the selection committee.

Robert J. Yalch Endowment Scholarship for Studio Art, Art History and Pre- Art Education

Seven scholarships for any studio art, art history or pre-art ed major will be awarded through a generous grant from the Robert J. Yalch Endowment. Applicants must have a 2.7 GPA and must include a letter expressing interest along with a portfolio of 10-12 works (for studio art/ pre-art ed majors) or three to five page writing sample (for art history majors) to be evaluated by the selection committee.

Florence Simon Beecher Talent Scholarships

One to three competitive, $1,000 scholarships will be awarded through a generous grant from the Florence Simon Beecher Foundation. All students pursuing the BFA degree with a minimum 2.5 GPA are encouraged to apply for these competitive awards. Criteria includes: minimum 2.5 GPA, completion of scholarship application form, letter expressing interest and submission of an online portfolio of 10-15 pieces of original work.

Robert J. Yalch Student Travel Awards

Eight awards of no less than $250.00 will be awarded to students pursuing any major within the Department of Art for travel to conferences or other professional development opportunities. Applicant must have a 2.8 GPA. Applications must include a proposal outlining the purpose and relevance of travel to your educational goals, a description of your travel plans, and a budget including anticipated costs.
