Richard Helfrich is an Assistant Professor of Graphic + Interactive Design at Youngstown State University and practicing graphic designer. He holds a Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts in Graphic Design from Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) and a Bachelor of Science in Graphic & Communication Design from La Roche College. In 2004, he received the SCAD graphic design artistic scholarship and in 2008 was the recipient of the SCAD Faculty Thesis Award for his topic: Reducing Look-Alike, Sound-Alike Pediatric Medication Errors.   Prior to joining the faculty at YSU in August of 2011, he served as Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at La Roche College in Pittsburgh, PA from 2002 – 2010.   Professor Helfrich is an award-winning art director and an accomplished practicing graphic designer. He currently operates a successful branding and web design company in conjunction with Echo Strategies and Zola Design.  In addition to his current professional experience, he served as a creative services manager for West Penn Allegheny Health Systems and Art Director in the Office of Public Relations at La Roche College.   He is a member of AIGA, the professional association for design and served as a board member for the Pittsburgh chapter from 2009 – 2011. He remains active with the organization and is serving as co-faculty advisor for the AIGA student chapter.
